Wasps are sociable insects that can live in vast colonies of up to 10,000 workers that can build nests in trees, buildings, compost heaps, sheds, and holes in the ground.

Queen wasps hibernate in the winter before emerging in the spring to build nests and lay eggs.

The workers in the colony will later take over the nest building duties and collect food for the growing Larvae in to the spring and summer months.

Wasps are voracious predators and they control plant pests such as caterpillars and aphids.

Without wasps many of the pests of our natural food crops would not have many natural predators, these pests would eat most of the food crops before we were able to harvest the crops to eat on our plates.

In the UK the wasps that you are most likely to come across are German Wasps

( Vespula Germanica ) and ( Vespula Vulgaris ), both species are yellow and black stripped.

Both species have painfull stings that can cause allergic reactions.

To get rid of wasps you do not need to remove the nest but instead the nest needs to be treated.

Wasps
This is the time of year when the nests are just starting and the numbers are low.

It is the Queen wasps that come out in spring from hibernation over the winter months and start to build the nest.

The common wasp: Vespula Vulgaris or the

These species are very similar in size and colour predominantly yellow with black markings.

They re-emerge in spring to seek out egg laying sites outside.

The problem starts when the swarm is in a difficult to reach location and the queen can’t be located / collected.

Community Project - Dons Local Action Group.

Here at SW19 Pest Control Ltd we were contacted by an organisation that is very close to our hearts.

Dons Local Action Group.

You may have heard about this group, or you might not have.

This is what they do.

•They address food poverty in the community by providing weekly food parcels to vulnerable people.

• They help you provide access to education by providing children without access to their own computer, a laptop via their Keep Kids Connected campaign.

So how do they provide this?

They are made up entirely of volunteers and provide over 2,500 weekly food parcels to those in need in the London boroughs of Wandsworth, Merton, Kingston and Richmond.

They operate by setting up stalls outside over 20 local supermarkets Where they ask shoppers to donate certain items each day.

These donations then go to a local sorting hub where they are packaged in to weekly food parcels for vulnerable and isolated people in the borough, as well as being taken to chefs who make meals for the homeless.

So Who Benefits from their work?

Dons Local Action Group help people in need of food, furniture and technology in the London boroughs of Wandsworth, Kingston, Merton and Richmond.

Families and people in need are referred to them by charities, food banks, the police, Doctors, schools and social services.

Signs of Squirrels in your home or property.

Squirrels are members of the family Sciuridae, a family that includes small- medium size rodents.

As cute an appearance that squirrels may have, they can be an incredibly destructive and distressing pest to have in your home.

Grey squirrels Sciuris Carolinensis are invasive pests and are not native to the UK.

They were first introduced in to the UK from North America in the 1870s as ornamental additions to high class estates and country homes.

This continued until the 1930s when it was then realised the damage that they can cause and it became illegal to release grey squirrels in to the wild.

They usually live between 5-7 years.

Signs of Squirrels in your home or property.

• Scratching and rustling from your loft or wall cavity.

• The smell of urine in the loft area.

• Signs of droppings in your loft.

• Seeing lots of other squirrels around your property, particularly near your roof or on high fences.

• Bark being stripped from trees in your gaden.

So where do Bed Bugs come from?

It is believed that the main reasons why people have seen an uprising in bed bugs infestations are down to:

• Global travel.

• Second hand furniture sales, and also you have probably seen the online forums where people are giving away free items such as an armchair or a wardrobe.

IMPORTANT to know that although they are called bed bugs they do not just live in beds!

They can live in furniture, wardrobes, chairs, sofas, carpets, and any cracks and crevices.

Bed bug symptoms

Apart from discovering suspicious bites, there are some other signs that you might have a bed bug problem. Such as.

• Dark / black stains around your mattress and bed frame, particularly around the slats and joins in the frame.

• Small dark blood spots on your bedding.

• Live bed bugs on your furniture and skirting boards.

Some people have a very bad reaction to bed bug bites. They can be very itchy and there me be painful swelling.

A severe allergic reaction ( anaphylaxis) is also possible but rare.

• Putting something cool, like a clean damp cloth, on the affected area to help with the itching and any swelling.

• Not scratching the bites to avoid them getting infected.

• Keeping the affected area clean.

• using a mild steroid cream like hydrocortisone cream to ease bed bug bites ( children under 10 and pregnant woman should get advice from a doctor before using hydrocortisone cream )

• antihistamines, these May help of the bites are very itchy and your unable to sleep.
